Khorezm region is situated in the north-western part of Uzbekistan. Its territory makes 6,1 thousand km² and occupies and occupies 1,4% of the republic territory. For July 1,2008 the population accounts for 1518 thousand people, of whom 21,9% live in the town and 78,1% in the countryside. Density is 249 people per 1 km².
 
According to geographic location Urgench is situated between 40⁰-31⁰ and 42⁰ longitude North and 60⁰ – 62⁰ latitude East. The extent of the region territory makes about 280 km from the north-west to south-east, and 80 km from west to east, at the longitude, at which town of Urgench is situated. The extreme northern point of the region is Nuronbobo wild forest (Nuronbobo tuqay) near Olchinn village in the district of Gurlan, the southern – is Tupqroqqala.
