Khorezm region is situated in the north-western part of Uzbekistan, in the plain, on the left bank of the lower reaches of the Amu-Darya River.

In the north and the north-east the region borders on the Republic of Qaraqalpakistan, in the south and south-west – the Republic of Turkmenistan.

The climate in the region being is sharp-continental, the winter is cold, precipitation is rare, the temperature in winter falls down to -300 C, in summer rises up to +450 C.

The Amu-Darya is the source of watering and drinking water, and it is connected with many areas requiring irrigation by canals, such as Palvan, Gazavat, Shavat, P-8, Qulavat, with the total extent of about 1000 km.

From time immemorial, the soil of Khorezm Oasis has become saline to different degrees. But the muddy water coming from the Amu-Darya equalizes the level of saltiness, ameliorates the structure of the soil, enriches it with microminerals and raises its fertility. For this reason, the soil of Khorezm region has always yielded heavy harvest.

The government has taken drastic measures against salinization of soil.

Thus, according to the decree of the Republic of Uzbekistan President about “Measures on land-improvement system perfection”, there are several arrangements for complex conducting of state land-reclamation programme elaboration and creation of the definite sources of its financing.

Hence, the programme of land-reclamation measures in the region for 2008-2012 years has been worked out and submitted to the State Committee.

In conformity with the measures, it is planned to clean the drain ditches of the collector of 16506 km to the extent.

The so called natural drainages are being used widely and properly for decreasing and holding in balance the level of subterranean waters. In this situation of great benefit is to plant mulberry trees and other plants suitable for the conditions on the contours of each area under crops. Mulberry trees are not only feed for the silkworm, but also protect the soil from erosion and function as the “natural drainage”.

Khorezm region is notable for its rich flora and fauna. Because of the Abu-Darya flowing along the borders of the region, there appeared wild forests called “tuqays” and ealeaegnus angustifolia, tamarix and populous pruinosa thickets on the bank of the river, which are the dwelling – place of such mammals as a wild boar, a felis euptilura elliott, a badger, a jackal, and also of such birds as a pheasant, a woodpecker, an oriole, a magpie and different reptiles.

Because of the southern part of the region passing through the Kara-Kum desert, an absolutely different scenery can be seen there. Growing in the desert plants such as haloxylon, tamarix, ranunculaceae and calligonum aphyllum are not spread evenly everywhere. In the areas round the natural lakes of the region grow such sorts of grass as cane, alhagi pseudalgihagi, artemisia, agropyron repens, bromus tectorum and agriophyllum. Of the representatives of the vertebrates such as a fox, a felis margarita loche and a jackal, different rodents and a lark, a petrocles orientalis and a wild pigeon are found in this zone.

The total area of the regional forest fund is 78412 ha, of which the area of 42000 ha is covered with the forest.

Ecological safety

In recent years much has been done to secure ecological safety in the region, particularly, improving water quality, installation purificatory equipment at industrial enterprises, conducting pest control with the least usage of chemical matters.

And also, transferring the cotton-cleaning plant from a settlement in Khonqa district, putting into operation by Iranian firm “Shimbar” the water purifying construction that purifies 100 thousand cubes of water a day, opening 120 biological laboratories in agricultural field.

In 2006 regional hakimiyat approved the programme for the years 2006-2010 aimed at environment protection, which included 22 different measures. 8 of them concern protection of water canals, 3 – protection of atmosphere, 7 – of land resources and 4 measures concern protection of flora and fauna. The sum at a rate of 1880288 thousand sums was allocated for realization of these plans and also 4,14 km long Tuya-Muyun dams were repaired and concreted.

One of the main tasks for today is to improve the work and process of the running water purifying construction that was put into operation in 1978. In accordance with the Programme confirmed by the order issued on July 18, 2008 by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a number of planned measures will be realized regarding the running water purification construction in the town of Urgench.

1. To build a water-purifying construction. The power of each is 60 thousand cubic meters a day.

2. To reconstruct 9,8 km long water canals and sewerage system in the town of Uregnch.

3. To repair and renew the work of the 4 water – stations in the town Urgench. The power of each is 30 thousand cubic meters a day.

4. To build 11,2 km long water canals in the town of Urgench.

5. To build a 11,4 km water supply between the ¹5 water station and water purifying construction.

Ecological projects

In 2002 the German-Uzbek project aimed at studying the economic and ecologic system of water and soil use in Khorezm region, was put into practise. The main goal of the project is to train younger specialists and scientists and to work out the proposals on raising the economical index and ecological level of agriculture in Khorezm region.

Now the research group of the project are studying the moving force and trends of economical index development of Khorezm region agriculture.
