General Information about Khorezm Region Khorezm region is situated in the north-western part of Uzbekistan. Its territory makes 6,1 thousand km2 and occupies and occupies 1,4% of the republic territory. For July 1,2008 the population accounts for 1518 thousand people, of whom 21,9% live in the town and 78,1% in the countryside. Density is 249 people per 1 km2. According to geographic location Urgench is situated between 400-310 and 420 longitude North and 600 – 620 latitude East. The extent of the region territory makes about 280 km from the north-west to south-east, and 80 km from west to east, at the longitude, at which town of Urgench is situated. The extreme northern point of the region is Nuronbobo wild forest (Nuronbobo tuqay) near Olchinn village in the district of Gurlan, the southern – is Tupqroqqala. Khorezm can be divided into 2 parts – the 1st is situated 100-110 m above sea-level and the 2nd is – 120-150 m above sea-level. The climate of the town is sharp-continental, and the difference between maximal and minimal temperatures is 780. Because of Khorezm region being surrounded by desert, the temperature in summer rises up to +430 – +450 C, in winter it falls down to -300–330 C. The main peculiarities of the region climate are changeable weather during the day, rare precipitation, the air dryness. The administrative center of Khorezm region is the town of Urgench, and the region itself is divided into 10 administrative – territorial units, which are in their turn divided into 101 public assemblies, 612 settlements, 3 towns and 7 settlement of city type, For July 1, 2008 the population of Urgench, the administrative centre of the region, accounts for 135,5 thousand people. Of 27 big industrial functioning enterprises, 13 concern to subjects of light industry. The total extent of roads is 2296 km, of which 2218 km is the extent of the asphalted roads. There is an international class airport in the region, connected with different international airlines. There are modern telephone network, communication systems (pager, modem and mobile phone), radio and television. Because of agrarian field being mainly developed, the region produces 280-290 thousand tonnes of raw-cotton, which makes 7% of the republic total volume of cotton output. Many-sided history of Khorezm has always attracted the attention of Uzbekistan’s and foreign scientists. The territory of the region abounds in relics of the past, among which, particularly, historical monuments in Khiva town attract the world’s attention now. There are such monuments in Khiva as Ark, Kaltaminar, Pakhlavan Mahmud’s tomb and monuments of Dishanqala, that stand out from all the other monuments of the town. The architectural complex of Ichanqala in Khiva is entered in UNESCO world heritage list. The 2500 anniversary of the pearl of the East, the town of Khiva was celebrated on a world’s scale in 1997. As is generally known, Khorezm is considered one of the most ancient centres of the world’s civilisation. According to the conclusion of scientists, the foundations of Uzbek national statehood were laid exactly here. It is also known that a rare memorial of Uzbek culture, the book “Avesto”, was created on Khorezm soil. And the word “Khorezm” was first mentioned in this book. This word consist of the 2 Persian words – “khvar” – “the sun” and “azm” – “the land”, the combination of which means “the sunny land”. In ancient times the territory of Khorezm was inhabited by such peoples as massagets, sagas, apasagas, oses, dakh and the others. This ancient land gave the world such scientists as Muhammad Muso Khorazmiy, who laid the foundations of algebra and algorithm, Abu Raykhan Beruniy, who was the first man, even 500 years before Christopher Columbus, to predict the existence of the land – some unknown continent across the Atlantic Ocean and to create a globe – a diminished model of the Earth, Mahmud Zamakhshariy, who worked up and improved the rules of the Arabic Language and was awarded a title of “Jorilloh”, that is “Allah’s neighbour”, in the whole Muslim world. Khorezm is the mother-land of such world-known thinkers, scientists and workers of culture and art as Pakhlavan Mahmud, Sultin Uvays, Nosiruddin Rabguziy, Sulaymon Boqirgoniy, Bakhouddin Valad and his great son Jaloliddin Rumiy, and also Abulqasim Ali Khorazmiy, Ismoil Jurjaniy, Sirojiddin Sakkokiy, Munis, Bayoniy, Chokar, Khajihan Boltayev, Komiljon Ataniyazov and the others. |
